Poul Cadovius 1911-2011
Poul Cadovius was a danish furniture designer and cabinet maker.
In 1945, he founded the furniture manufacturing company Royal System which evolved into Cado.
Poul Cadovius designed the Royal system in 1958 and Cado in 1959. The Royal system was one of the first wall mounted shelving system furniture.
I still remember one of his employee that I've met in Kolding at Lauritz telling me how they struggle to find a solution for the double parallel holes on the cado bars to place the corner shelf brackets. It was an italian company that came up with a solution and they produced the drilling machine which was a spectacular machinery as he explained it. The first Cado system were all produced in Denmark using solid rosewood for the corner shelf brackets but it wasn't cost effective as the costs were way too high to make profit. At first they changed the materials for the corner shelf brackets from solid rosewood to mahogany, then used teak instead of rosewood and later on they used oak. They move some of the production of the royal system to the netherlands.
All the first Cado systems made in Denmark have corner shelf brackets in solid rosewood. The veneer on the shelves and cabinets it was a mix of Ziricote, santos rosewood, east indian rosewood and honduras rosewood. Even though some claim that it was Rio Rosewood I doubt that as it wasnt cost effective to use rio rosewood. It was very rare and very expensive to satisfy the volume of production.

This wall unit is from the first generation, from late 1950s All the corner shelf brackets are in solid rosewood.
It is in its original condition, not restored, we cleaned it and waxed it keeping the original patina. but it still carries some wear due to the age and use.
Museum quality for : Representative of the mid century Danish modern design. Well preserved and not altered
